Here is the short story of the somewhat famous WalkCam. ¶ Shortly before the now ubiquitous Internet webcams became so popular, I setup a QuickCam digital camera in my Newport Beach apartment and used a scripted FTP program to put pictures on the Internet. To my surprise and amusement, the website became a popular Internet destination that pulled as many as 3500 views a day. As the idea took off, I expanded operations and put cameras in 5 Newport Beach apartments, a local Balboa coffee shop and in my office. ¶ Personal webcams soon hit their stride with the likes of JenniCam and it appeared that the WalkCam site was poised for greatness! Indeed, within 6 months the site was the subject of a New York city radio talk show, it was featured in the and the OC Register and in the LA Times and it was briefly mentioned in Elle magazine (next to a picture of a hot girl!!). At one point, the site was even featured on the Australian version of '60 Minutes' with my voice and picture on the TV (I was actually on the phone, but they told me I was on TV). ¶ Flash forward 10 years and the original cameras are gone, the HTML is primitive ("Grunted out with Notepad") and the webcam concept seems a bit worn, but back in the day it was a hot ticket. Yes, the glory days! Anyway, these archives are arranged with new pictures on page 1 and going back in time as you go thru the pages. Enjoy! |
